The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District hosted “National Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 19th, 2022. The community was invited to Ski Beach to celebrate the nationally recognized day by having a pirate costume contest, Pirate joke contest, and to watch a pirate movie. The Breakthrough Task Force, and the Friends of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo were invited to participate by engaging with youth and parents and having handouts, swag, and pamphlets for all participants.
Ski beach was decorated with pirate themes, prizes were donated for the contests, candy, and fidget spinners were ready to be handed out. Kids and adults all came dressed up and ready to have fun. Participants listened to pirate music and sang Sea Shanties while kids played, all while wearing eye patches, and eating candy. At sundown we had a pirate movie play.
All in all, everyone had a great time and are looking forward to making this an annual event with bigger and better activities planned for next year.
